These \u201csensor\u201d proteins detect metals or harmful compounds and trigger gene activation to help bacteria survive in hostile environments. The lab\u2019s research has two key objectives. On the biomedical side, gaining a deeper understanding of how bacteria adapt to colonize host tissues could pave the way for developing more effective antibiotics to fight drug-resistant strains. On the biotechnological side, the team is working to incorporate these sensor proteins into portable, cost-effective synthetic biology sensors. In this sense, the Capdevila lab is pioneering the field of cell-free biosensors in Argentina, and, in collaboration with local authorities, these sensors are being deployed to monitor drinking and surface water in various urban areas.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-a654e8d\" id=\"strong-skills-amp-tools-strong\" data-block-id=\"a654e8d\"><style>.stk-a654e8d .stk-block-heading__text{color:var(--theme-palette-color-1, #164193) !important;}<\/style><h3 class=\"stk-block-heading__text has-text-color\"><strong>Skills &amp; tools<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-260d7c4\" data-block-id=\"260d7c4\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">In the lab we have all the necessary tools and expertise to express and purify recombinant and isotopically labeled proteins, study protein dynamics and thermodynamics of metal and DNA binding, develop sensors based on in vitro transcription and lateral flow chromatography. Through the Leloir Institute we have access to a 600 MHz Bruker NMR spectrometer, which we use to study proteins up to 50 kDa in solution. Our group also enjoys access to an ITC instrument where we study protein binding to metal ions and DNA.
